There’s no doubting that we live in a DIY culture. More people these days are landscaping their own yards, building their own decks, and changing their own oil than ever before—primarily because they want to save money. But should the same attitude be taken towards instructing our kids how to drive? Yes, car insurance for teenage drivers is expensive and nobody’s faulting anyone for wanting to save a bit of cash. But were you aware that not enrolling your teenager in a driver’s ed class can hurt matters when it comes time to buy auto insurance?
Here’s a fact that can’t be ignored. Car insurance for teenage drivers is far higher for those who haven’t completed a driver’s ed class than it is for those who have. The reasons why are obvious if you view it from the insurance company’s perspective—a teenager that’s been given in-depth instruction by a certified instructor is far less likely to make costly mistakes behind the wheel.
Ultimately, parents also have to take their teenager’s safety into consideration when determining if they want to pay for driver’s ed. Whether or not the aim is to save money when they buy auto insurance, giving a young driver a solid foundation in their education behind the wheel can save lives—and everyone can agree that saving lives is far more important than saving money.
