Recent Tornadoes Stress the Importance of Home Insurance

The recent spate of tornadoes throughout the midwest and the south highlights a somewhat disturbing trend among homeowners who live in the path of one of nature’s most destructive and unpredictable forces. A shockingly high number of these homes are not insured, leaving their owners literally out in the cold when disaster strikes.

Taking into account the national average, 4 percent of homes occupied by an owner are left uninsured. Although this seems like a small number, the trends actually grow disproportionately when you look at specific regions, like The South, where 17 percent of homes don’t have any kind of hazard insurance at all.

The reasons vary, of course, but most center around the fact that insuring homes in areas that are particularly prone to certain disasters, like tornadoes, can be extremely expensive – leading many homeowners to forego insurance altogether simply to make ends meet. In many instances, however, a lack of knowledge about how to shop around for homeowner’s insurance can also be blamed.
